Ericsson lab to start work on 5G use cases

Publication- The Economic Times

Edition- Online

Date- 29 May, 2019

Swedish telecom gear maker Ericsson’s 5G innovation lab in New Delhi is set to shortly begin work on developing new 5G use cases, following the telecom department’s intervention to iron out differences between the vendor and IIT Delhi. Launched with much fanfare by telecom minister Manoj Sinha and Ericsson president and CEO Börje Ekholm last year, Ericsson’s 5G innovation lab recently stopped its 5Grelated work around technology testing and use cases after its radiating spectrum licence expired. “DoT has taken increased interest over the last few days that has helped us fast-track the activities of the centre of excellence,” Brejesh Lall, coordinator for CoE at IIT Delhi, told ET.

IIT Delhi had previously sought clarity from Ericsson on the comprehensive use of the test bed, along with technology upgradation timeline and the vendor’s claimed capabilities. “DoT has been in constant touch with both Ericsson and IIT-D to expand the scope of the 5G testbed and to discuss the way forward. The department wants more industry partners to be a part of this testbed to give a push to the testing of technology and the use cases,” a government official told ET.

Digital infrastructure provider Tata Communications on Wednesday launched an Internet of Things (IoT) marketplace to bring together IoT practitioners and enterprise customers on a single platform. This will enable customers to tailor their IoT solutions and drive innovation within their business while enabling vendors and partners on the platform to discover new market opportunities, it said in a statement.

Consulting major Frost & Sullivan finds that the enterprise IoT market in India will grow at a compound annual growth rate of 35 per cent through 2023, quadrupling the market by then. Indian enterprises have not been able to fully leverage the opportunities as there is a lack of standardisation, interoperability and connectivity in the IoT market.

"By bringing together best-of-breed IoT players on one online B2B marketplace, we are breaking new ground in the journey to unlock the power of IoT in India," said Alok Bardiya, Head of IoT business unit at Tata Communications.

While there is no denying that the Internet of Things (IOT) is going to completely change the way we interact with objects around us—-be it changing colour of a light bulb to preparing coffee, or driving a car to taking print out at workplace--the technology is still a work in a progress with several missing pieces. Here are some of the technologies that are likely to fill in those gaps.

Most IOT devices currently rely on WiFi networks for connectivity and to pair to other devices on the network. However, there are many devices that do not have access to WiFi all the time. Many of these devices are currently powered by SIM (subscriber identity module) technology which offers a more extensive coverage than WiFi. However, shipping a separate SIM into every unit of the device is turning out to be logistic issue.
