After DoT intervention, Ericsson's IIT Delhi lab to soon begin work on new 5G use cases
Publication- ET Telecom
Edition- Online
Date- 28 May, 2019
Swedish telecom gear maker Ericsson’s 5G innovation lab in New Delhi is set to shortly begin work on developing new 5G use cases following the telecom department’s intervention to iron out differences between the vendor and the IIT-Delhi. Launched with much fanfare by telecom minister Manoj Sinha and Ericsson president and CEO Börje Ekholm last year, Ericsson’s 5G innovation lab recently stopped its 5G-related work around technology testing and use cases after its radiating spectrum license expired.
"DoT has taken increased interest over the last few days that has helped us fast-track the activities of the centre of excellence,” Brejesh Lall, coordinator Ericsson 5G CoE IIT Delhi told ET. IIT-Delhi had previously sought clarity from Ericsson on the comprehensive use of the test bed, along with technology upgradation timeline and the vendor’s claimed capabilities.

Vodafone Idea, BSNL, Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio to Deploy Blockchain to Tackle Pesky Calls and SMS
Publication- Telecom Talk
Edition- Online
Date- 28 May, 2019
Vodafone Idea and Reliance Jio Infocomm will be rolling out a blockchain based technology, reported ET Telecom. This new technology would help millions of consumers in tackling pesky calls and messages, which often become a reason of nuisance for the subscribers. Analysts are also of the opinion that this would be the biggest use case of blockchain until now in the teelcom space. While Vodafone Idea and Reliance Jio would implement these through partnerships with Tanla Solutions and Tech Mahindra, Bharti Airtel already has a similar deployment under way in a partnership with IBM.
It is also worth noting that the massive blockchain deployment from the telcos will allow the users to manage and set their communication preferences and consents. To make this happen, Vodafone Idea has forged a multi-year contract with Tanla Solutions to deploy the technology, along with a regulatory sandbox and production platform. A Tanla spokesperson also said that the deployment is currently underway and added that the company is also a vendor to Bharti Airtel and is helping it in implementation of the network, however, IBM remains the bigger vendor of the two.

Panel seeks flexible licensing regime for 5G trials
Publication- The Economic Times
Edition- Online
Date- 28 May, 2019
A committee on 5G trials has asked the government to come up with flexible conditions including sufficient quantum and duration of spectrum, unified license and single-window clearances to conduct the fifth-generation (5G) trials. “The things should be simpler for experimental license and single window clearance and license for multiple locations should be provided,” a government source told ET, and added that the panel has also suggested that the Department of Telecommunications ( DoT) look at awarding non-interfering radio waves for trials.
In February, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has formed a group headed by IIT-Kanpur director professor Abhay Karandikar to make recommendations related to licensing as well as the quantum of airwaves among other aspects for offering experimental spectrum for carrying out 5G pilots. Earlier in 2018, the government has asked telecom carriers — Vodafone Idea, Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio and state-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) — to partner with telecom gear makers such as Cisco, Samsung, Ericsson and Nokia, and undertake field trials to showcase India-specific 5G use cases.
