Neighbourhood ATMs vanishing? Smartphone-enabled Micro ATMs come to your rescue

Publication- The Financial Express

Edition- Online

Date- 27 June, 2019

From six ATMs a year ago in a part of a South Delhi colony, only a single machine has been able to survive as the Confederation of ATM Industry (CATMi) has decided to shut down nearly 50 per cent ATMs due to high maintenance cost of software and equipment upgrades. One can easily understand the load on that single ATM and what happens when it goes out of cash or out of order. If this is the scenario in the Capital city and that too in South Delhi, it is not hard to imagine the problem the people of rural areas are facing due to the plummeting number of ATMs at the moment. Considering the quantum of crisis, Spice Money has taken up the pressing task of developing an alternate transactional framework.

Dedicated towards applying fin-tech solutions to achieve greater financial inclusion, Spice Money, a DiGiSPICE Group company, has taken a strong step towards this objective through its ‘Micro-ATMs’ similar in design to Point-of-Sale card machines. India has the world’s second largest number of internet users and is expected to have more than 450 million smartphone users by 2022. Considering the same, the company has launched smartphone-enabled Micro ATMs across its existing 2 lakh customer touchpoints.

Rural operators seek cheap network gear from Ericsson and Nokia

Publication- Telecom Lead

Edition- Online

Date- 27 June, 2019

The regional carriers include Pine Belt in Alabama and Union Wireless in Wyoming. They are seeking discounted pricing and looking forward to government assistance. The talks are critical for small carriers that have relied on Huawei Technologies or ZTE for inexpensive, high-quality mobile network gear even though the big U.S. telecom companies dropped the Chinese firm their procurement list due to security concerns.

The U.S. government has effectively banned U.S. companies from doing business with Huawei. The report said switching vendors will not be easy. Nokia and Ericsson will not match Huawei’s pricing. Roger Entner, an analyst at Recon Analytics, estimated Huawei and its compatriot, ZTE, charged 30-50 percent less than rivals.

The Internet of Things is all set for a revolution in the 2020s when we may have tens of billions of devices all across the globe continuously sending a huge amount of data which will have to be stored, crunched and analysed. After the advent of the desktop and the laptop and mobile, India has recently seen a revolution in smartphones, mobile broadband and e-commerce. IoT + AI + ML is the next logical step not just in the world but in India too.

So here are 10 things you should note about this emerging technology…

1. “Things” not “people”: While the full form of IoT is Internet of Things, it’s focus is on “things” rather than “people”. That means “things” on their own may transmit the relevant data on a continuous basis via the Internet on a central server. Sensors may be placed on any device. In a forest, any device may transmit data related to wildlife, weather etc. A wristband may also transmit information to a hospital on information related to temperature or sleep.
