IoT-enabled logistics will drive business growth in a world of opportunities

Publication- ET Auto

Edition- Online

Date- 27 February, 2019

The possibilities it opens for the various industries are staggering. Business, today, is differentiated not so much by the front-end product or service offering as by the processes that run quietly in the background, enabling the said product or service to be delivered in a transparent, efficient, reliable, and safe manner.

One of these processes is logistics, and it is as good an example as any to demonstrate the relevance of IoT; how online interconnectivity can inform and improve physical connectivity. It wouldn’t be far-fetched to say that IoT-aided logistics will be the key to driving innovation and business growth in the future.

IoT, in conjunction with emerging technologies such as Big Data and Data Analytics, has the potential to transform almost every important aspect of logistics – a sector that demands a high degree of transparency and integrity throughout the supply chain.

Rancher K3s shrinks Kubernetes for IoT devices

Publication- Computer World

Edition- Online

Date- 27 February, 2019

Rancher Labs, creator of the Rancher Kubernetes management system and the RancherOS container-centric Linux distribution, has announced a new Kubernetes distro built to be slender and simple. K3s, as it’s called—a play on “K8s,” a common abbreviation for Kubernetes—is aimed mainly at the edge computing and standalone device markets, but can also support scenarios such as a self-contained Kubernetes-powered app distribution. The x86-64, ARM64, and ARMv7 platform architectures are all supported.

K3s uses a variety of techniques to squeeze a Kubernetes distribution into 512 MB of RAM, using a single 40 MB binary. K3s omits many features that bloat up most Kubernetes distributions, such as rarely used plug-ins, and consolidates the various functions of a Kubernetes distribution into a single process. Nevertheless, Rancher Labs claims K3s passes CNCF’s “Certified Kubernetes Distribution” tests.

Mercedes-Benz develops Blockchain-prototype for sustainable supply chains

Publication- Autocar Professional

Edition- Online

Date- 27 February, 2019

Mercedes-Benz Cars and Icertis, a leading provider of enterprise contract management solutions in the cloud, have teamed up for a strategic partnership for a consistent documentation of contracts in the supply chain. Daimler says it requires its direct suppliers to vigorously pass on and control standards and contractual obligations with regard to working conditions, human rights, environmental protection, safety, business ethics and compliance within the supply chain. The Blockchain prototype allows a transparent mapping and understanding of this transmission across the entire supply chain. Should one of the sub-suppliers deviate from the contractual obligations, this becomes visible in the Blockchain, similar to a secure accounting system. Mercedes-Benz Cars and a number of Icertis experts have successfully developed and programmed a prototype. Acceptance by suppliers and partners is now being tested in a pilot project, and feedback is being obtained.

According to Wilko Stark, Member of the Divisional Board of Management Mercedes-Benz Cars, Procurement and Supplier Quality attaches great value to sustainable supply chains: "Blockchain technology has the potential to fundamentally revolutionise our procurement processes, and could affect nearly the entire value chain. Global supply chains are becoming increasingly complex. With our Blockchain prototype, we are in the first step testing one of diverse possible applications with the aim of increasing transparency beyond our direct suppliers."

In Next 5 To 6 Years, AI To Make Significant Impact In Healthcare And IoT Space: Beena Ammanath, HPE

Publication- Express Computer

A few years ago, the industry was in the narrow intelligence stage and it was expected to take a few more years to get to super intelligence. What is the current status?

I think it is still narrow, however we see certain industries combining narrow intelligence to do more complex tasks. For instance, in a self-driving car, there are different components of AI that come together that make it a self-driving car. Also, when we think of general or super intelligence, we imagine a machine doing everything that a human can do. However, for this to happen, we require emotional intelligence, which I don’t think we have the underlying models or programing languages for it yet.

Google Releases Search Tools for Blockchain

Publication- Crypto News

Edition- Online

Date- 27 February, 2019

While cryptocurrencies have been a no-go for search engine giant, Google, the blockchain technology has been embraced by the company. Google recently launched search tools that allows a user to search for patterns in a blockchain of their choice. These tools permit a user to search a blockchain in much the same way that they would search the internet, a news portal, The Bitcoin News said. The portal further noted that the tools would allow Google to analyze patterns in transaction flows which would further allow the company to then develop appropriate blockchain technologies and potentially even predict future crypto prices.

This is not the first time, we are hearing of this. Earlier, Crypto-News India had reported on Allen Day, a 41-years old data scientist at Google, who recently used one of his tools developed at Google to figure out a “mysterious, concerted usage of AI” on Ethereum blockchain. According to him this usage was by a whole bunch of “autonomous agents” that were moving funds around “in an automated fashion”. While he couldn’t figure out who has created these agents, he thinks that they’re created by cryptocurrency exchanges to trade between themselves for artificially inflating the price of Ether.

Publication- Money Control

Edition- Online

Date- 27 February, 2019

The government has spent around Rs 1.5 lakh crore, six times the money used for urban rejuvenation during the 10-year UPA rule, and is not going to stop at just 100 smart cities, Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said at the Second National Apex Conference of CEOs of Smart Cities held in the New Delhi on February 27.

The rapid rate of progress of the mission is an answer to the 'cynics and naysayers who doubted what we are doing'. "The amount spent on urban rejuvenation in the 10-year rule of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA), from 2004 to 2014, was around Rs 1.5 lakh crore. The money spent between June 2015 and February is six times that amount at around Rs 8.6 lakh crore. That's the difference in terms of scale and intensity," he said.
