Subex joins GLF's communications blockchain network

Digital technology provider Subex said on Tuesday that it will be a part of the ITW Global Leaders' Forum's Communications Blockchain Network (CBN), a blockchain-based consortium which aims to revolutionise the ICT service provider industry's commercial settlement infrastructure. Through its mission to accelerate the adoption of automated settlement applications, CBN represents an opportunity worth billions of dollars to the global industry in terms of costs savings and revenues from new products and services.

The ITW Global Leaders' Forum is a global network of leaders from the world's largest international carriers who convene to discuss strategic issues and to agree on collaborative activities, with the aim of upholding the principle of interoperability and ubiquitous international and technological coverage.

The CBN, which is expected to go live in the coming months, will be governed by a collaborative structure. Besides technology providers like Subex, the platform will see support from 11 leading global carriers to ensure this blockchain-based special purpose mechanism can become a reality.

Microsoft, Times Internet-backed Affle acquires mobile marketing platform RevX

Singapore-based mobile commerce and marketing solutions provider Affle Holdings Pte. Ltd has acquired the platform and business interests of US-based mobile marketing company RevX Inc. Apart from the platform itself, Affle will also acquire RevX’s brand name, assets, intellectual property rights, business relationships and technical information as part of the deal.

In a statement, the company said the acquisition will strengthen its own platform meant for user acquisition and re-targeting. It didn’t disclose financial details of the deal. Affle chairman Anuj Khanna Sohum said the company was confident of its move because of the synergies between the company and RevX.

Huawei leads in 5G RAN competitive analysis

Huawei’s 5G RAN portfolio has been ranked no.1 in a Competitive Landscape Assessment (CLA) of the 5G Radio Access Network (RAN) infrastructure conducted by GlobalData. The report evaluates the 5G mobile base station portfolios of five key vendors: Ericsson, Huawei, Nokia, Samsung and ZTE. The analysis is based on the criteria important to mobile operators including: baseband unit capacity, radio unit portfolio, installation ease and technology evolution, GlobalData said.

Huawei holds the strongest position overall, with leading claims in all four criteria categories, including superior baseband unit capacity and radio unit portfolio breadth, the report said. Ericsson’s greatest strengths lie in solutions for easing radio installation, such as its Street Macro and Vault Radio offerings, an area in which the vendor holds a leading position.

In 4th year, mission Smart Cities sees big gains

Four years after Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched an ambitious mission to smarten up 100 cities chosen through a competitive process, the BJP government’s flagship programme is finally showing progress on ground with 897 projects worth Rs 14,847 crore being completed. Closely monitored by Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), the mission has seen a complete turnaround since June 2018. The mission was launched by Modi on June 25, 2015.

The number of projects completed has seen a quantum jump of 182% over one year. The projects completed have jumped from 318 in June 2018 to 897 this month. Even private participation in the mission is increasing. At the outset, Smart City Mission had set a target of financing 21% of the total mission cost through private participation. So far, 15% of the projects under implementation are under public-private partnership (PPP) mode.

Less than 10% South Asian homes have an IoT device

Just 8.7 per cent of homes in South Asia have Internet of Things (IoT) or "connected" devices such as Internet-enabled TVs or surveillance camera against a global average of 40 per cent, new research said on Monday. In North America, on the other hand, 66 per cent households now have at least one IoT device, said the study conducted by cyberseucirty firm Avast in collaboration with Stanford University.

The researchers found that media devices like smart TVs are most common in seven of 11 global regions but there is significant variance otherwise. For example, surveillance cameras are most popular in South and Southeast Asia, while work appliances prevail in East Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa.

IAN-Incubated IoT Startup Tsecond Raises $370K from US Based Tech Fund, LEPL

Nagpur, Maharashtra-based Tsecond Generation Technology Pvt. Ltd., an Internet of Things (IoT) startup incubated by Indian Angel Network‘s Incubation and Mentoring Services and Nagpur Angels, has raised approximately US$370,000 in a fund round led by a US based Tech Fund, LEPL USA, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of US-based FutureTech Holding Company, reported The Hitavada, a regional daily.

Other investors who participated in this round includes Jayant Chopde, CEO at Emergys Corporation, John Janakiraman – CTO at Emergys Corporation and Jai Shankar, CSO/Founder of Emergys Corporation. With this funding, the total funding raised by Tsecond counts close to US$750,000.

SWIFT Gives Blockchain Platforms Access To ‘Instant’ GPI Payments

Global interbank messaging giant SWIFT reveals that it will allow blockchain firms to employ its Global Payments Innovation (GPI) platform for near real-time payments, as per a report published late last week. SWIFT stated in the report that after a successful proof-of-concept with R3’s Corda platform, it would “soon be enabling gpi payments on DLT [distributed ledger technology]-based trade platforms.”

The GPI payments would resolve the “payment challenges” faced by DLT platforms. The firm further explained that said payments would be initiated within trade workflows and be automatically sent on to the banking system. GPI was launched in early 2017, as a set of business rules encoded on top of the firm’s existing infrastructure, so as to increase speed transparency and the traceability of transactions.
