Ericsson shines in preparation for Indy 500 debut
Publication- Yahoo News
Edition- Online

This past week of practice for the NTT IndyCar Series’ crown jewel race has proven again how difficult it can be to master Indianapolis Motor Speedway. In four days of (theoretically) seven hours each, the world’s most storied track bit Felix Rosenqvist of Chip Ganassi Racing, McLaren Racing’s Fernando Alonso, Kyle Kaiser of Juncos Racing and Patricio O’Ward of Carlin, all four shunts that started somewhere north of 220mph. On Saturday, it was Arrow SPM’s own James Hinchcliffe who spun and hit the wall.
IMS has always had the ability to drive grown men crazy, its fickle nature bipolarizing according to ambient conditions and track temperature. That has been exacerbated this year due to a penetrant (that’s Speedway officials’ word for a sealant that embeds deep into the track) to help preserve it; the surface has turned darker and therefore heats up quicker. The end result is the same as ever: drivers and engineers who think they have finally fettled their cars to cope with the unique demands of the 2.5-mile Speedway can, within 90 minutes, find their car handling with all the panache of a shopping cart with a wobbly wheel.

Local gear ‘strategically’ important, government to take call on Huawei: Trai
Publication- ET Telecom
Edition- Online
Date- 20 May, 2019
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) feels that localised manufacturing of telecom equipment would be strategically and economically significant for India, and it expects the government to accept its views soon. “Manufacturing of backend telecom equipment is of strategic as well as economic importance. It must be done,” Trai chairman Ram Sewak Sharma told ETT, adding that it is up to the government to take a decision.
On asking about Huawei network which has come under scrutiny worldwide and the US finally blacklisting the Chinese firm, Sharma said that “it is up to the government to take a call” on the matter. The regulator, however, feels that the “safety and security of the telecom infrastructure and equipment” is of absolute importance. Swedish gear maker Ericsson said that the government and the regulator should create a level the playing field for all companies who do local manufacturing in India without differentiating whether they are local or foreign.

Paytm, Paytm Everywhere But Profitability Nowhere In Sight
Publication- Bloomberg Quint
Edition- Online
Date- 20 May, 2019
On May 15, payments firm Paytm tied up with foreign lender Citibank to introduce a co-branded credit card. Not surprisingly, the card came laden with the promise of cashbacks to help lure customers to sample the latest offering from the Alibaba-backed and Vijay Shekhar Sharma-promoted payments firm.
The new addition joined a plethora of products introduced by the Paytm ecosystem over the last few years, making it a mini financial conglomerate. From gold and savings bank accounts to mutual funds and forex services, Paytm and its associate firms are offering it all. If Sharma gets regulatory approval, insurance and peer-to-peer lending may soon be added to the list.
Earlier last week, Vijay Shekhar Sharma, founder of One97 Communications Ltd.—the parent company of Paytm—acknowledged that profitability is some time away. The business is “sustainable” but profitability may be some time away as the company is spending more on on-boarding users and merchants, Sharma said on the sidelines of the launch of the Paytm First credit card.

Blockchain may make e-commerce cheaper, fairer
Publication- Livemint
Edition- Online
Date- 18 May, 2019
Blockchain-based system that allows buyers and sellers to interact directly can make e-commerce platform for digital goods "cheat proof" and the products cheaper, says a study by India-origin researchers. Blockchains allow multiple stakeholders to transact money or data virtually over linked peer-to-peer computer networks. Besides Blockchain, their proposed solution involves "smart contracts" and game theory.
"Our scheme offers potentially a big improvement over the state-of-the-art in electronic commerce because it allows buyers and sellers to interact directly with each other without the need for third-party mediators of any kind," said Bhaskar Krishnamachari, Professor at Viterbi School of Engineering, University of Southern California, the US.
