Ericsson bolsters its 5G portfolio to push deployment

Swedish telecom gear maker Ericsson said that it launched new software and hardware solutions to expand 5G deployment options extending network capacity and coverage, enabling smooth network evolution, and facilitating new consumer and industry use cases. While already supporting frontrunner service providers through the rollout of commercial 5G using non-standalone (NSA) 5G New Radio (NR), Ericsson has now introduced standalone NR software. In addition to extending deployment possibilities, 5G standalone NR software makes for a new network architecture, delivering key benefits such as ultra-low latency and even better coverage.

Ericsson said is also evolving its cloud solution with an offering optimized for edge computing to meet user demand. This will enable service providers to offer new consumer and enterprise 5G services such as augmented reality and content distribution at low cost, low latency, and high accuracy.

Paytm rebrands its gaming platform Gamepind as FirstGames

Paytm is rebranding its gaming platform Gamepind as FirstGames, which claims to have garnered over 30 million registered users since launch in February 2018. With over 300 games and quizzes for gaming enthusiasts, the company is clocking a run rate Gross Merchandise Volume (GMV) of Rs 20 crore monthly, it said.

The fintech firm is also looking to raise $30 million to expand its gaming platform and scale it with more games, according to people familiar with the matter. Players can win Paytm cash, movie tickets, flight tickets, and physical goods such as two-wheelers, according to the company’s blog post.

Last August, Paytm’s parent company, One97 Communications Ltd, and the Alibaba Group-owned gaming and entertainment company AGTech Holdings Ltd had infused $16 million into the platform. Paytm did not respond to an e-mailed query till press time.

Cisco, Accenture partner with DGT to skill youth for digital economy

The Directorate General of Training (DGT) on Friday joined hands with IT networking major Cisco and global consulting firm Accenture to skill youngsters for digital economy. Along with the implementation partner Quest Alliance, the comprehensive future-ready employability skilling programme will equip students enrolled in Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) across India over the next two years.

Nearly 15 lakh students across all ITIs can access the digital learning module from Bharat Skills portal. "It is imperative that we as a nation adapt ourselves to the new-age technology and skills which are market-relevant today," said Secretary at the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship K P Krishnan.

"Our ITI ecosystem has been one of the most outcome-based networks for skill development and this partnership today is a step further in enabling and empowering our industrial institutes with the latest in digital skilling," he said in a statement.

EY India, in collaboration with FICCI has launched a report on the ‘Future of IoT’ at the Rajasthan IoT summit in Jaipur. The report outlines the future of IoT from business potential and technology point of view while highlighting its impact on emerging technologies such as 5G, Artificial Intelligence, among others.

The industries that are forecasted to spend the most on IoT solutions in 2019, globally, are manufacturing (US$197 billion), consumer IoT (US$108 billion), transportation (US$71 billion), and utilities (US$61 billion). European Union to Help Create CoE for ‘IoT for Smart Cities’ at IIIT-Hyderabad

European Union, through its India-EU ICT Standardisation Cooperation Project, is supporting the creation of a Centre of Excellence (CoE) on Internet of Things (IoT) for Smart Cities at IIIT-Hyderabad. As part of the CoE, the EU India project will not only help to design relevant courses on IoT, but will also facilitate capacity building by supporting research collaborations and exchange of experts between India and EU.

With an aim to build a deeper understanding of the standards driven approach for smart cities, and facilitate collaboration between various smart city stakeholders across India and EU, the project will also organise outreach activities such as hackathons, workshops and conferences. These activities would be organised on varied components of IoT including the use of standards such as oneM2M for interoperability for the benefit of public at large.

Industrial IoT startup SwitchOn raises $1 mn seed funding from pi Ventures

SwitchOn, an AI-enabled industrial IoT (Internet of Things) platform, has raised $1 million in seed round of funding led by pi Ventures, an applied AI, IoT and blockchain focused early stage venture fund. Axilor and Chennai Angels were other participants in the round. Founded by Aniruddha Banerjee and Avra Banerjee in 2017, the Bengaluru headquartered SwitchOn helps manufacturing industries identify plant-level bottlenecks and improve equipment efficiency. Industries can create digital twins of their heavy assets, monitor and predict availability and performance hurdles in advance, thus ensuring better efficiency for the equipment and the plant.

SwitchOn will use the funds for strengthening the edge-compute architecture, expanding the team and market adoption in India and other countries in the EU (European Union) and APAC (Asia Pacific) region. “SwitchOn is leveraging xpertise in hardware and software design to create edge solutions for increasing transparency, reducing turn-around, and improving quality on the shop-floor of manufacturing industries to achieve operational excellence,” said Aniruddha Banerjee, co-founder, SwitchOn.
