Blockchain in affiliate marketing: Will it disrupt or improve upon existing software architecture

Publication- The Financial Express

Edition- Online

Date- 04 May, 2019

The emergence of Distributed Ledger Technologies (DLTs) and its capability to disrupt traditional business value chains have made affiliate marketing industry also stand-up and acknowledge the potentials of blockchain. DLTs have an inherent advantage over legacy demand and supply side platforms in the affiliate marketing industry. It is more transparent, self-administrating with smart contracts, secure and fraud-proof. These claims though have to stand the test of time and experts are closely monitoring the evolution of this technology. But aren’t existing affiliate marketing platforms already guaranteeing features like transparency, lower administration costs, fraud prevention and more? The difference is that blockchains are inherently a trustless model with no central authority and all transacting parties are at the same hierarchy.

A blockchain-based demand-supply side platform will essentially expose all network participants (publishers, exchanges and advertisers) to the same information, thereby improving the traceability of KPIs. Advertisers who are doubtful about the ROI of partner programs would be able to trace the lineage of every impression, lead, sale and more. By the same token, publishers who are concerned that they aren’t being fairly compensated for their efforts would be able to confirm the delivery (and subsequent activity) for every lead they send.

Prominent Japanese electronics producer Panasonic and convenience store mega-chain FamilyMart have launched a new store here as a joint demonstration project between them. This experimental project utilises IoT technology and various data to achieve enhanced operational efficiency for customers. With the latest facial recognition and image analysis technology developed by Panasonic, customers can register their photo and credit card information and then check out using the unmanned register. When desired items are put in the centre of check out corner, the price is automatically calculated and the money is withdrawn from the user's pre-registered credit card.

The store is thoroughly equipped with camera and sensor to digitize information in the store. Camera and infrared radiation sensors are installed in the general shopping area to detect customer movement and the number of products on the shelf. Dwell time heat maps are also generated from camera and sensor combined with Smartphone survey and conventional POS data to lead to actionable data.

Why blockchain is vital for IoT

Publication- ET CIO

Edition- Online

Date- 06 May, 2019

Businesses know that IoT fits well with other popular enterprise computing technologies and blockchain is no exception. But implementing blockchain in an IoT application can be challenging and requires a strong understanding. Blockchain is a distributed ledger, cryptographically secured that allows safe transfer of information between two parties. That’s a powerful security technique and the data protected by that blockchain can’t be forged or otherwise fiddled with. So it becomes obvious why the use of blockchain is an attractive option for some companies.

Part of the reason for that, over and above the bare fact of blockchain’s ability to securely distribute trusted information across a network, is its place in the technology stack, according to Jay Fallah, CTO and co-founder of NXMLabs, an IoT security startup. “Blockchain stands at a very interesting intersection. Computing has accelerated in the last 15 years in terms of storage, CPU, etc, but networking hasn’t changed that much until recently,” he said. “Blockchain’s not a network technology, it’s not a data technology, it’s both.”
