Ericsson Joins O-RAN Alliance

Ericsson has joined the O-RAN Alliance, a group of leading telecom service providers and suppliers with the commitment to evolving radio access network (RAN) architecture and orchestration built on openness, intelligence, flexibility and performance. As a member, the company will focus on the open interworking between RAN and network orchestration and automation, with emphasis on AI-enabled closed-loop automation and end-to- end optimization, to lower operating cost and improve end-user performance.

Ericsson will also focus on the upper-layer function as specified in 3GPP to provide interoperable multivendor profiles for specified interfaces between central RAN functions, resulting in faster deployment of 5G networks on a global scale.

Erik Ekudden, Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, Ericsson, says: “Ericsson is a strong supporter of openness in the industry, and the benefits this has on global ecosystems and innovations. Our ambition is to actively support and drive discussions and developments around future RAN architectures and open interfaces. The O-RAN Alliance is an important coalition that creates an arena for these discussions, complementing other standardization and open-source initiatives in the industry which we are already active in.”

Digithon signs MoU with Blockchain University

To offer growth opportunities in this area, Digithon has entered into a memorandum of understanding with Seattle based Blockchain university. The partnership will involve Digithon to create awareness across India on the programmes of the university and provide access to the programmes to the students.

Telangana Information Technology Association will be a partner in this initiative along with JNTU. In this direction, Digithon CEO Sundeep Kumar Makthala and Blockchain University Country Head Akash Bansal signed a MoU on Monday.

Bitcoin, Blockchain Technology Now Backed By Major Universities

More prestigious educational institutions are now recognizing cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, as well as blockchain technology, as a “critical skills” required to have a successful career in modern-day technologies.

It was reported earlier in January that the University of New Hampshire School of Law had started offering blockchain and cryptocurrency law certificates, dubbed as BC&L. Under the program, students will be introduced to blockchain technology, smart contracts, as well as cryptocurrency trade details.

The latest institution to recognize cryptocurrencies and blockchain technologies is Massachusetts Institute of Technology. MIT believes that almost every profession is going to be influenced by blockchain technology, 3D printing and artificial intelligence. Reportedly, Facebook Makes Its First Blockchain Acquisition With Chainspace

In what would be its first apparent blockchain-related acquisition, Social media network Facebook has reportedly acquired Chainspace, a small blockchain startup. According to Cheddar reports posted on Feb. 4, sources have reported that Facebook had acquired Chainspace, in an ‘acquihire,’ i.e acquisition of a company majorly for the skills or expertise of its staff, rather than the service or products the company provides.The report further adds that four of the five researchers that worked in Chainspace’s academic whitepaper will be joining Facebook. Apparently, Facebook has had hired the researchers, but have not acquired any of Chainspace’s technology, a spokesperson for the social media giant told Cheddar.

According to the startup’s website, it was founded by researchers from University College London and the firm is currently working on blockchain scalability problems, notably by applying sharding to smart contracts.

Still, in its baby phase, the Blockchain technology is applauded for the technology for its security and trustless capabilities in processing transactions. However, currently, the technology is not scalable to the level of traditional payments systems like Visa or PayPal. Where Visa is capable of 2,000 transactions per second (tps) and PayPal can process 115 tps, the current Bitcoin (BTC) network fluctuates between two and 18.

Vodafone Idea trials NB-IoT networks for Genus Power

Vodafone Idea announced its partnership with Genus Power Infra to set up Proof of Concept NB-IoT networks in India. Vodafone Idea will conduct advanced trials at Genus’s R&D facility at Jaipur, Rajasthan around Automatic Metering Infrastructure. Narrowband IoT is considered to be the next growth engine in the IoT space which allows greater network coverage, improved battery life of 10 years plus for devices, and the ability to slice and partition the network for specific use case.

“With the power of NBIoT, we look forward to bringing digital transformation in agriculture, healthcare, utilities such as energy, water & gas distribution and smart city applications,” Nick Gliddon, chief enterprise business officer, Vodafone Idea said. Vodafone Group has earlier launched NB-IoT networks in many countries including Czech Republic, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Australia, Netherlands, South Africa etc. and is the global leader in managed IoT, with 74 million plus connections.
